U of A PhD student Libe Garcia Zarranz has been named a recipient of the prestigious Trudeau Scholarship. When doing her master's, Garcia Zarranz "examined the evolution of Walt Disney movie heroines during the 1990s, from Ariel in The Little Mermaid to Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame." Today she studies women writers who have moved to Canada.
Garcia Zarranz told the Edmonton Journal,
“These women writers are now living and writing in Canada, but because of their backgrounds, they are not Canadian in a strict sense,” Garcia Zarranz explained. “They are not the stereotypical Margaret Atwood Canadian women writers.
“These different writers come from different national origins, like one of them was born in Ireland but then she was raised in Trinidad from East Indian origin and she moved to Canada. I’m interested in these kinds of women writers who keep moving around the planet.”
